It's absolutely essential that you get everything to do with your shed foundations correct to ensure your investment lasts for years regardless of the weather. There are a a few different types of shed foundations for you to consider and I will go over what you need to know in this article.
Dirt floor is the easiest foundation to do and this fine for a pole type barn. This will not do if your shed has actual framing of the walls as it will need to sit on a level, dry and stable surface to function correctly.
Is water drainage an issue? If so you can place your shed on crushed gravel. I recommend you put blocks on this gravel and then put the sheds floor supports on these blocks to keep the shed up off the ground.
Using a concrete slab is an effective but expensive way to set shed foundations. Most homeowners, however are not comfortable pouring their own concrete slabs. Don't forget that concrete absorbs water and you must use pressure treated wood wherever it comes in contact with the concrete.
My preferred option is to use concrete piers that are poured below ground. You can attach beams that your shed can rest on. This will keep your structure off the ground while giving the solid support of a concrete foundation saving you tons of money in future repairs.
It is essential that your shed will rest completely level so the doors and windows will fit and operate properly. Make sure that water is diverted away from the foundation so it will not settle and cause the building to lean to one side or the other.
It's important that you have decent shed foundations plans. You need a detailed description of the different shed foundations options and information on which is best for your design and location. Without the correct building plans you will struggle so be very careful to get the best.
The website I would recommend for Shed Foundations Plans and guides is http://www.woodworking4homes.com. They currently offer a 50% discount on the package with over 14,000 plans and projects. With that kind of help it's almost too easy!
You can save yourself time, energy and frustration with the best help in the business just like I did.
